Making It All Work
Has there ever been a day when there wasn’t a single lower sideband (LSB) signal to be heard on 3937 kc (3.937 MHz) at 0200 UTC? After a few minutes of confirming that a Net Control Station (NCS) is not calling the FARM Net, most FARM Net members are not aware that they too can call the Net. While this situation occurs very rarely, it might help to know how a NCS calls the Net.
In the event that a FARM Net member steps up to call the Net for the regularly scheduled NCS, that member will need to remember the order in which Net is called. The first thing a NCS does each time the Net is called is to read the preamble. Some NCS’s have called the Net for so long they no longer have to read it but recite it from memory instead. Depending on the NCS, they may also choose to emphasize certain parts, or divert slightly from the text of the preamble. That is left entirely up to the NCS calling the Net at that time.
Once finished with the preamble, the NCS should follow the usual order of business for the FARM Net that includes calling for mobile stations, calling the roll, calling for late or missed mobile stations, Farm Net members and visitors. The calling of the Net is concluded by reading the closing. While it isn’t engraved in stone that the text of the preamble and order of business should be followed to the letter, it is best for uniformity to try to stay as close to these scripts as possible.
One thing that is easily overlooked when calling the Net is the need to have the latest roster in hand before starting to call the Net for the evening. Even though the changes to the member list are infrequent, it is easy to have an outdated copy of the roster if you haven’t downloaded or requested a copy of the latest roster. Please be sure to check the Current Roster page of this web site to make sure no changes have been made to the roster since you last obtained your copy.
Copies of the preamble, closing and order of business are found below, and PDF copies may be downloaded should a local copy be desired.
