2024 FARM Net Manager Message to Members

Greetings from your 2024 net manager, KF0AUW.   I am new to being a net manager, so I hope you’ll bear with me as I learn more about all of you.  I am taking my new responsibilities seriously and care about each and every one of you.

In regards to being excused:  I have read the bylaws.  I agree with them to a great extent.  However, I have a few things to add to this.

  1. If a person has a prolonged illness or is taking care of a family member with a prolonged illness, there won’t be a time limit on when they have to come back to the roster.
  2. We have many older members with various issues who are also highly taken into consideration.  I have several whom have answered emails and one who called us back regarding his situation.  These members will remain on the roster.
  3. There are some who were excused for various reasons during the last 3 months of 2023.  Some did not give return dates.  I will be contacting some of those people to see if they have a return date.
  4. The only people who will be dropped from the roster are those who do not respond after several months of trying to contact them or do not contact the net manager.  I will make every effort to contact people.  Some do not have email addresses.  Therefore, I will write a letter to that person, if necessary.
  5. Those who have 3 or less check ins and are not excused will NOT automatically be dropped from the roster without contacting them.  Again, some do not have email addresses.

I hope to serve you well during my term as net manager.  Jerry, KF0AUV, does all of the record keeping and web work.  If it weren’t for him, I wouldn’t be able to do this.  Also, thank you to Larry, N7ZDR, who has provided the remote station we use to run the net and check in.  Without him, none of this would be possible.  If you have any questions, please contact us via the net manager link above.

Blessings, and 73,
Shawnne KF0AUW

Remember Dave, W7DAL

Most of the time we talk about members, but David Lien,W7DAL, has checked in well over 150 times since we’ve been keeping track. in 2021. He has had health problems for a while, as of August 18th he has been in assisted living without access to ham radio.  I would welcome anyone to look at his qrz page: https://www.qrz.com/db/W7DAL.

Praise for the FARM Net

2023 FARM Net Manager Martin, KE7KQE forwarded this nice e-mail he received about the FARM Net and its associated web site from youth services librarian Helen Garraway. Please note the interesting resource located at the bottom of the received e-mail in case you would like to learn more about wireless communication history. That link has also been added to the Helpful Hints page with a hat tip to Noah for referring it to us. Kudos to the FARM Net and enjoy!

Good Evening Mr. Tushkowski and Mr. Tessman-McKenna,

As a youth services librarian, I would just like to reach out with a quick word of thanks! Your group’s amateur radio operator interest resource links list has been a big help to me while I’ve been running a fun ham radio and broadcasting class for a small group of 9-13 year olds over the last few months. We were even able to use some of this information for our most recent group project! Thanks so much for sharing farmnetweb.net/helpful-ham-hints/

I hope you don’t mind, one of our youngest, Noah has also asked me if I could share an article that he and his father found together recently on Ham Radio, Broadcasting and its History with you, which includes a great breakdown on Reginald Fessenden’s first broadcasting experiments, the Herrold School’s contribution towards radio transmissions and call signs in 1909, Post World War II radio broadcasting developments, etc. I’ve included it below if you’d like to review!

We noticed you didn’t have this one listed, but Noah was actually the one to bring up that this could be something you might like to include for others who may also come across your information and have an interest in learning more on radio history during their down time, like our group!

If you find you’re able to use this one, would you please let me know? We’re meeting Saturday afternoon, and I would absolutely love to surprise Noah if you are able to do so – my hope is to provides encouragement and I thought it would make him proud to see he was able to pay it forward on a topic he’s passionate about and maybe even show his father their contribution if it ends up being included!

Thanks again for all your help here,

Helen Garraway
